Since its inception, Reimagining Justice Inc. has fervently championed a mission to reimagine a system that embraces culturally responsive, evidence-based, and trauma-informed solutions, particularly amplifying the voices of communities disproportionately affected by violence. Through technical assistance, capacity building training, and relentless advocacy, Dr. Chowdhury and her team shed light on the stark realities of gun violence’s disproportionate impact on young men and women of color.
At the helm of the Paterson Healing Collective, Dr. Chowdhury orchestrates a collaborative initiative poised to diminish gun violence and enhance public health and safety in Paterson, New Jersey. Established in 2020, the Paterson Healing Collective emerges as a beacon of hope, rooted in the compassionate corridors of St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, catalyzing a wave of healing across the city.
With over two decades of multifaceted experience spanning criminal justice, higher education, and nonprofit sectors, Dr. Chowdhury brings a wealth of skills in community outreach, program development, grant writing, research, and advocacy. Armed with a PhD in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University, her journey from senior probation officer to esteemed academic underscores her unwavering commitment to creating positive social change through innovative, evidence-based approaches.
As a scholar activist and devoted yogi, Dr. Chowdhury’s passion for justice and healing infuses every facet of her work. From her tenure as a Probation Officer, where she tirelessly advocated for justice-involved youth, to her current role as an academic luminary, she remains steadfast in her pursuit of trauma-informed community-based solutions and safe spaces for youth. As a certified Yoga Instructor, she seamlessly integrates wellness practices into her work, fostering resilience and empowerment within communities and classrooms alike.
Dr. Chowdhury’s dedication extends beyond the realms of academia, as she volunteers with youth-focused community organizations, consults with family-centric initiatives, and partners with credible messengers to pioneer innovative interventions for justice-involved youth. Her ultimate goal is to harness the power of community partnerships, academic research, activism, healing practices, and education in the relentless fight against inequality and injustice.
Dr. Chowdhury’s research interests encompass the intersectionality of juvenile justice, gender dynamics, mass incarceration, restorative justice, collective efficacy, racial disparity, and trauma-focused violence interventions. In 2017, she co-founded Reimagining Justice, a nonprofit dedicated to providing transformative support and innovative solutions for youth in schools and communities. Through partnerships spanning Belize, Illinois, Virginia, New Jersey, and New York, Reimagining Justice endeavors to reshape a justice system rooted in love, empathy, equality, and opportunities for all.

Casey C. Melvin, a son of the vibrant city of Paterson, embodies resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to community upliftment. Rooted in the heart of Paterson, he has not merely lived, but thrived, dedicating his life to service, entrepreneurship, and advocacy.
For over two decades, Casey has carved his path as a self-made entrepreneur, founding Kutt Creators in 1994, a sanctuary where scissors and razors weave stories of transformation. Renamed Simply the Best Barbershop in 1998, it stood as a beacon of camaraderie and trust for over a quarter of a century.
Beyond the confines of his barber’s chair, Casey extends his wisdom and compassion, imparting barbering expertise to inmates at Passaic County Jail. Through the art of grooming, he becomes more than a barber; he becomes a confidant, a mentor, and a pillar of strength for his community.
A true champion of Paterson, Casey orchestrates experiences and opportunities that transcend generations. The annual celebration of The Day of the Babies, now in its twenty-fifth year, stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication to the city’s youth.
As a founding member of the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.S. of Paterson and an active participant in community initiatives, Casey’s activism knows no bounds. Whether it’s combating violence with The Paterson Street Keepers, managing The Men Stand Up Anti-violence Initiative, or supporting organizations like Team Charity and BAND Against Neighborhood Destruction, he remains at the forefront of change.
A dedicated parent, Casey wears many hats, serving as president of the PTO and the Paterson Public Schools Parent Leadership Alliance, ensuring that every child has a voice and a champion in their corner.
In his role within the Paterson Healing Collective, Casey brings the full weight of his extensive network and profound relationships, fostering unity and healing across diverse communities. Guided by the wisdom of Marcus Garvey, he exemplifies the ethos of self-determination, urging others to seize their destinies with confidence and faith. A quote that he lives by comes from Marcus Garvey, “I trust that you will so live today as to realize that you are masters of your own destiny, masters of your fate; if there is anything you want in this world, it is for you to strike out with confidence and faith in self and reach for it.”

A legal luminary in his own right, Adam’s journey from Rutgers Law School to federal judicial clerkship and corporate practice reflects his formidable intellect and unwavering dedication to excellence. Immersed in the “Tomorrow’s Teachers” program during her formative years, Isenia’s passion for nurturing young minds was ignited. Her tireless efforts in providing tutoring services throughout Hudson County earned her recognition from the esteemed “Olivero’s Teaching Family,” a testament to her commitment and dedication to education.
Fueled by her desire to make a tangible difference, Isenia pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from New Jersey City University. Crisis Intervention Specialist
Born and raised in Harlem, Jason Davis is an African American Author, Poet, Inspirational Speaker, and Parent Consultant on youth self-inflicted injuries. Davis has cultivated a youth empowerment movement based on gang diversion and strengthening mental health in the Black community. As an adolescent, he found himself drawn to a life riddled with drugs and gang affiliation.
A long-term tumultuous relationship with his father became a catalyst for years of mental anguish, which manifested itself by way of multiple crimes and acts of violence. In 2005, Davis met Terrie Williams, a well-known public relations strategist, author, and mental health advocate. With her support, Davis was able to assess the course in which his life had taken and make the transition necessary to reconcile his past. He began to make amends for his past transgressions through youth advocacy endeavors. Davis made a name for himself as an inspirational speaker in multiple private and public institutions across the country. He has presented alongside the likes of the revered Reverend Alfonso Wyatt, former WNBA player Marion Jones, former Essence Magazine editor in chief Susan L. Taylor, former Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Author Terry McMillan, Actor John Amos, former Newark Mayor Corey Booker, Political Activist Fred Hammond Jr., and Malcolm Shabazz to name a few.
High-Risk Interventionist
Javis Porter, a lifelong resident of Paterson, is a beacon of a lifelong resident of Paterson, is a beacon of hope and transformation within his community. As a survivor of gun violence, Javis channels his personal experiences and deep-rooted community connections into a powerful mission: to mediate conflict, reduce violence, and guide the youth of Paterson towards brighter futures.
With an unwavering commitment to his community, Javis serves as a mentor to young people navigating the harsh realities of violence and academic disengagement. His firsthand understanding of these challenges enables him to connect with and inspire the youth in profound ways, offering them both guidance and a vision of what their lives can become.

With credibility earned through years of service and trust, Kashif extends a hand of compassion to those at the center of gun violence, offering not just solutions, but solace. Through nonviolent means such as de-escalation and mediation, he fosters healing and reconciliation, transforming conflict into opportunity and promoting safety amidst chaos.
But Kashif’s impact transcends the confines of his professional role. As a mentor to the youth of his neighborhood, he offers guidance and support to those navigating the treacherous waters of violence and disengagement from school. Case Manager/Interventionist
Born and raised amidst the bustling streets of Manhattan’s low-income neighborhoods, Justin Estevez embodies the resilience and fortitude synonymous with overcoming adversity. Growing up in an environment fraught with violence and the challenges of urban life, Justin forged a path illuminated by dedication and unwavering determination.
As a young man navigating the complex landscape of American society, Justin understood firsthand the obstacles that hindered progress. However, rather than succumb to the limitations imposed by his circumstances, he embraced his mission to uplift his community and pave the way for fellow minorities to ascend to greater heights.
From an early age, Justin assumed the role of a beacon of guidance and support among his peers. Acting as a trusted advisor and mentor, he endeavored to steer them towards positive avenues, embodying the essence of a compassionate big brother figure.
Now, as a Case Manager/Interventionist with bilingual proficiency, Justin plays a pivotal role within the PHC team, extending their outreach to all corners of the community. Continuously embodying his role as a nurturing figure, he remains a steadfast mentor to younger participants while extending a helping hand to all who seek assistance.
Justin’s journey towards empowerment doesn’t end with his professional endeavors. Currently pursuing his education at William Paterson University, where he majors in Sociology and Criminology, he is poised to leverage his academic insights to enact tangible change within his community. His previous internship at Oasis provided valuable experience, but it is at Paterson Healing Collective where he has truly found his calling, merging his passion for social justice with his commitment to serving others.

Case Manager
Dellwanna Miller is a proud native of Paterson, New Jersey who embodies resilience, determination, and unwavering dedication to her community. With an Associate of Science degree and certifications in Human Services from Passaic County Community College, she is currently pursuing a major in Social Work at William Paterson University. In 2014, Dellwanna faced an unimaginable tragedy when her oldest son, Jaleek L. Burroughs, was taken by gun violence. Channeling her grief into action, she decided to transform this personal loss into a catalyst for positive change. Supported by family and friends, she founded #THEVILLAGEPATERSON at the end of 2015.
#THEVILLAGEPATERSON is more than a community organization; it is a movement dedicated to reclaiming and revitalizing city blocks. Through the creation of murals, distribution of food and clothing, and neighborhood cleanups, Dellwanna and her team educate both youth and adults on the devastating effects of gun violence. Her powerful voice has echoed across schools and colleges in New Jersey and New York, raising awareness about the far-reaching impact of gun violence on families left behind. Further extending her mission of healing and support, Dellwanna founded #IAMMYSISTER, an organization and support group for parents who have lost children to violence. The mission of #IAMMYSISTER is to provide a nurturing space for mothers and fathers to heal, foster sisterhood, and empower each other to become community leaders. Through this sisterhood, families find strength, solidarity, and the courage to rebuild.
Dellwanna’s mantra as an activist resonates deeply: “If I can take a gun from one young man or woman, I’ve saved two lives—the shooter and the person at the other end of the gun.” Her tireless efforts and profound commitment to preventing violence and fostering healing in her community make her a beacon of hope and inspiration.
Grants Manager
Mrs. Alicia Brett Cooper embodies the essence of leadership, blending innate talent with honed skills, making her an exceptional asset in every endeavor she undertakes. Born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, Alicia is a proud product of Paterson Public Schools, graduating from P.S. 20 and Eastside High School, and later earning her associate degree from Passaic County Community College. Her educational journey continued at Rutgers University in Newark, where she earned a degree in Psychology. Alicia’s leadership qualities shone early in her career as she worked as a teacher in early childhood development at Day Care 100, located near her college. During her ten years there, she impacted young minds, learning that meeting people where they are requires both courage and love.
Her professional journey then took her to the corporate world as a billing specialist, where she expanded her skills in finance. Despite her corporate success, Alicia’s passion for serving her community never waned. She became the youngest International Youth Department President for CJC Inc., leading youth departments across the United States, Canada, England, Jamaica, Africa, and India for a decade. A true Patersonian, Alicia transitioned from corporate finance to the City of Paterson’s finance department, further expanding her expertise while building relationships with those in need of direction and assistance. Her dedication to her city is evident through her volunteer work with the Friends of Bill McKoy Foundation, organizing annual flagship programs for families throughout Paterson.
Embracing the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Alicia strives to honor the legacy of her late father, Bishop Arthur G. Brett: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of convenience and comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
This commitment to service culminated in her role with the Paterson Healing Collective. As an incredible Grants Manager, Alicia leverages her finance expertise to secure funding crucial for sustaining and growing community health initiatives. Additionally, she serves as a Case Manager, providing holistic support to victims of violence and their families, addressing trauma, and fostering healing. Alicia’s ability to think holistically, provide clear directions, and see beyond titles allows her to lead with vision, purpose, and love. Alicia Brett Cooper continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration, utilizing her years of leadership and organizational experience to positively impact her community. Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience, dedication, and the unwavering desire to make a difference.

Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, Amar R. Reynolds is a dedicated professional with over a decade of experience in career development, case management, and youth mentorship. As the only male in his immediate family to graduate from college, Amar’s journey is a testament to his resilience and commitment to education and personal growth. He played college basketball and was the co-captain of SUNY Purchase’s men’s NCAA Skyline Conference championship team, showcasing his leadership both on and off the court.
Amar has consistently demonstrated his ability to drive organizational success and empower young people through innovative programs and strategic advocacy. Previously, he has excelled in exceeding enrollment goals, streamlining processes, and establishing direct pipelines from local high schools to IT certification training, significantly enhancing opportunities for youth. His expertise in data management and analytics has been instrumental in increasing program efficiency and effectiveness.
