HVIP
Hospital Violence Intervention Program
A Hospital-based Violence Intervention Program (HVIP) represents a unique collaboration between medical professionals and community partners, united in the mission to deliver trauma-informed care to patients impacted by violence. With a core focus on identifying and addressing underlying risk factors, HVIPs aim to reduce the likelihood of recurrent violent incidents through targeted interventions and resource connections within both hospital and community settings. Utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach, HVIPs ensure comprehensive care for patients, intervening during critical teachable moments in healthcare settings to promote positive behavior change and facilitate both physical and mental recovery. Notably, HVIPs prioritize boys and men of color, addressing their specific needs to promote equity and foster better outcomes for all.
The Paterson Healing Collective is a pioneering hospital-based violence intervention program, dedicated to addressing the profound impact of violence on individuals and communities in Passaic County. Our mission is to provide compassionate support, healing, and empowerment to those affected by violence, while actively working to break the cycle of harm and promote positive change.
Operating within the hospital setting, we recognize the pivotal role hospitals play as crucial entry points for individuals impacted by violence. Collaborating closely with medical professionals, social workers, and community partners, we adopt a holistic and integrated approach to violence intervention and prevention.
Rather than waiting for individuals to seek care, our Hospital Violence Intervention Programs (HVIPs) proactively deliver trauma-informed care directly to patients in need within the hospital setting. We seize upon these critical “teachable moments,” where individuals are highly receptive to interventions promoting positive behavior change, as evidenced by numerous studies.
During these interventions, victims are provided with a comprehensive range of community-based services, including mentoring, home visits, follow-up assistance, and long-term case management. HVIPs prioritize identifying and addressing risk factors such as substance misuse and chronic unemployment, while fostering protective factors like social support, job readiness, and educational attainment.
Our ultimate goal is to empower individuals affected by violence to reclaim their lives, heal from their traumas, and forge a future free from violence. The Paterson Healing Collective is unwaveringly committed to fostering a community where every individual can thrive, liberated from the specter of violence, and equipped with the support necessary to lead fulfilling lives.
